HAYWIRE REVIEW
While you were out being well-adjusted and contributing to society, I decided on a whim to go see Haywire because I had nothing else to do this afternoon beside harass the local post office for misplacing my package.
A minor pet-peeve I have is when films make bad font choices, so seeing all the sexy helvetica action (helvetica light italic, in case you were wondering) in Haywire made it almost worth the price of admission. It isn’t the most remarkable creative decision but I appreciate the filmmakers not going with some cliche’d action movie font or spitting each letter out one after the other.
I’m not a big action fan but I like spy films and I like most Steven Soderbergh films that I’ve seen. This one reminded me of The Limey but I don’t think it’s nearly as good. I enjoyed the fight scenes but nothing else really worked for me.
The spy stuff is so standard-issue that halfway in I lost interest and just drifted into picturing Mallory Kane as a much younger Mallory Archer. It makes sense if you don’t think too much about it.
Gina Carano is really good at kicking ass and looking pretty. It’s almost as if Soderbergh saw her beat someone up in a bar fight and decided to write an entire script around her. I’m not really complaining. The fight scenes are some of the most believable fight scenes I’ve seen in a while. I hope her acting gets better.
